New rule from 5 October 2026

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance pays for emergencies on a trip outside Kenya: hospital treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation, trip cancellation, delays, lost baggage and personal liability. Kenyan insurers sell it per trip, as annual multi-trip cover, and as family, student, corporate and pilgrimage plans. No Kenyan law makes it compulsory for Kenyans travelling out, but the Schengen visa and several others require it, and since 5 October 2026 visitors coming into Kenya must hold separate Kenyan cover.

  1. No Kenyan law makes travel insurance compulsory for Kenyans leaving Kenya. The 2026 inbound rule applies only to visitors and exempts Kenyan citizens and residents; what you need abroad is set by your destination's visa rules.

  2. Under Gazette Notice No. 11492 of 30 July 2026, made under section 26(6) of the Social Health Insurance Act 2023, every non-Kenyan visitor must hold Kenyan Inbound Travel Health Insurance issued under the Insurance Regulatory Authority.

  3. Exempt: Kenyan citizens and holders of valid Kenyan residence status; citizens of East African Community partner states; asylum seekers; holders of diplomatic, official and service passports; crew covered by their employer's insurance or staying within the port; and transit passengers who do not enter Kenya.

  4. A Schengen visa needs travel medical insurance covering medical repatriation, urgent medical care, emergency hospital treatment and death, valid in every Schengen state for the whole stay, with at least EUR 30,000 of cover (Article 15).

In short: Kenyans travelling out buy cover because a visa asks for it or because medical bills abroad are too big to risk; non-Kenyan visitors coming in now must hold it.

What travel insurance covers

Every Kenyan plan is built around emergency medical cover; the levels differ in limits and in the extras.

Emergency medical care

Doctors, hospital stays, surgery and medicines after a sudden illness or accident abroad, from about USD 15,000 on Africa plans to USD 500,000 on the top worldwide levels.

Evacuation and repatriation

An air ambulance or escorted flight to a suitable hospital or home to Kenya, and repatriation of remains if the worst happens.

Cancellation and cutting short

Non-refundable costs if illness, injury or a death in the family stops the trip or brings you home early.

Delays and missed connections

A lounge pass or cash after a four-hour delay, and help with new flights if you miss a connection.

Baggage and documents

Lost, stolen or delayed checked baggage, and the cost of an emergency passport.

Liability and legal help

Claims if you injure someone or damage property abroad, legal costs, and bail advances on some plans.

How a travel claim works

  1. Call assistance first Ring the 24-hour number on your certificate before paying a large bill; it arranges the hospital and payment.
  2. Keep the evidence Medical reports, receipts, the airline's baggage report or delay letter, and police reports for theft.
  3. Claim within 31 days Send the claim form and documents within 31 days of returning to Kenya.
  4. Settlement The insurer pays the hospital directly or refunds you, usually within days of a complete claim.

  1. A Kenyan county health official who fell ill on a work trip to South Korea in December 2025 left a hospital bill of over KSh 17 million, and his body could not be flown home until it was paid; his family said SHA does not cover illness abroad.

  3. SHA pays for treatment abroad only for 36 listed procedures that are not available in Kenya, capped at KES 500,000 and approved in advance; it is not emergency cover for travellers.

Frequently asked questions

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance pays for emergencies on a trip: medical treatment and hospital care abroad, emergency evacuation, repatriation, trip cancellation or cutting a trip short, delays, lost or delayed baggage and documents, and personal liability. It is emergency cover for the length of a trip, not a general health plan.

Is travel insurance compulsory in Kenya?

Not for Kenyans travelling out. No Kenyan law requires it, but many visas do, starting with the Schengen visa (at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover). The 2026 rule that made cover compulsory applies to non-Kenyan visitors coming into Kenya, and Kenyan citizens and residents are exempt from it.

Do visitors to Kenya need travel insurance now?

Yes. Since 5 October 2026 every non-Kenyan visitor staying under three months needs Kenya's Inbound Travel Health Insurance (up to USD 44 per person), bought on eCitizen or with the eTA before boarding. Citizens of East African Community states and holders of Kenyan residence status are exempt. Our visitors' guide explains it in full.

How much is travel insurance for Kenyans?

On Kenyan insurers' published rates, a week in the Schengen area costs about USD 17–20 per adult (roughly KSh 2,200–2,600), a week in Africa or Asia about USD 13, and a year of trips USD 129–409. Children pay half; travellers aged 66–80 pay 50–100% more.

Single trip or annual multi-trip: which is better?

A single-trip policy is cheaper if you travel once or twice a year. On published rates an annual plan pays for itself from about the 8th to 13th one-week trip, or the 4th to 7th month-long trip, and each trip is limited to 92 or 180 days.

Does travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Usually not. Most Kenyan travel policies exclude any condition you had before the trip, and none pays for a trip taken to get treatment. One insurer will cover a declared condition if its underwriter agrees. If you have a long-term condition, tell us before you buy so we can find the right policy.

What does travel insurance not cover?

The usual exclusions are:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions, unless declared and accepted
  • Trips taken to get medical treatment, or travel against a doctor's advice
  • Treatment paid for without calling the assistance company first, above a small limit
  • Injuries linked to alcohol or drugs
  • Dangerous and winter sports, unless you add them
  • Flight cancellations made by the airline itself, at some insurers
  • Anything that happened before the trip, and treatment after you return beyond a small follow-up allowance
When should I buy travel insurance?

Buy it as soon as you book, and always before you leave Kenya: cover cannot be bought once the trip has started, and buying early means cancellation cover protects you if something happens before departure. For a visa, buy it before your appointment.

Can a foreigner living in Kenya buy Kenyan travel insurance?

Yes, if Kenya is where you live. Kenyan travel policies go by residence, not nationality: they cover trips out of Kenya and end when you return. One insurer limits cover to permanent residents. Holders of Kenyan residence status are also exempt from the visitors' rule.

Can I buy travel insurance from a foreign website instead?

You can, but section 20 of the Insurance Act bars placing Kenyan business with insurers not licensed in Kenya without the Commissioner's approval, claims are handled abroad in foreign currency, and Schengen embassies in Nairobi check their own list of approved insurers. A Kenyan policy from a listed insurer avoids all three problems.

Does SHA or my medical cover pay for emergencies abroad?

Generally not. SHA funds only pre-approved treatment abroad for 36 listed procedures, capped at KES 500,000, and most local medical plans give partial or no cover outside Kenya. Travel insurance, or international health insurance for long stays, fills that gap.

Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Most Kenyan travel plans now include COVID-19 medical treatment, and several pay for compulsory quarantine at USD 80 a day for up to 14 days. Some exclude other pandemics, so check the wording.
