Do you need travel insurance for a Kenya safari?
Yes. Since 5 October 2026 every non-exempt visitor must buy Kenya's statutory cover (USD 44, medical up to USD 20,000) on the official eTA or eCitizen portal. It has no cancellation cover and only USD 25,000 for evacuation, so many safari travellers also hold a full travel plan with higher medical and evacuation limits and trip cancellation.

What a medical emergency on safari costs
Reported air-ambulance rates inside Kenya range from about USD 2,300 (KSh 300,000) to USD 11,600 (KSh 1.5 million), depending on distance.

In one documented case an air ambulance from Nairobi reached a Masai Mara airstrip in about 45 minutes.
A UK travel insurer estimates that a long-haul air-ambulance flight home can cost more than GBP 100,000 (about USD 130,000), several times the statutory USD 25,000 evacuation limit.

Cover per traveller is capped at USD 50,000 in total: medical expenses including personal accident USD 20,000, emergency medical transport and evacuation USD 25,000, repatriation of remains USD 5,000, mental illness USD 1,000 and prescribed medicines USD 300.

- Trip cancellation that covers non-refundable lodge and safari deposits.
- A 24-hour assistance line you can call before paying a hospital.
- Every traveller's age declared: premiums rise from 66 and most plans stop at 80.

Tell us your activities
Game drives are the heart of a safari, and some activities need the insurer's say-so. Tell us your plans and we confirm cover with the insurer in writing before you buy.
Game drives and walking safaris
Tell us which parks and conservancies you are visiting and whether you will walk with a guide.
Hot-air balloon flights
If a balloon flight over the Mara is booked, say so, and the insurer confirms it in writing.
Diving and snorkelling
Give the depth and your qualification, and we ask the insurer to add diving to your plan.
Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro
Mount Kenya rises to 5,199 m and Kilimanjaro to 5,895 m, higher than many policies' trekking limits, so we check altitude cover first.
Adding Tanzania or Zanzibar
Many safaris cross into the Serengeti or end on a Zanzibar beach, and each country has its own visitor rule.
Mainland Tanzania (since 1 October 2026) and Zanzibar require a USD 44 Tanzanian inbound policy for most visitors; one policy covers both, bought for your first point of entry. Kenya's statutory cover does not count there.

One Kenyan visitor plan also covers Tanzania when Kenya is the country of arrival and most of the stay is in Kenya.

Your travel insurance from home
Keep your own policy if it suits your trip; it simply does not replace the Kenyan cover.
A visitor's own travel insurance does not replace Kenya's statutory cover, and the UK government still advises visitors to carry travel insurance that suits their trip.

The UK Foreign Office warns that travel insurance can be invalidated by travelling against its advice; it advises against travel to parts of north-east Kenya and to Lamu County except Lamu and Manda islands.

Longer stays and visitors you host
Staying more than three months
One statutory policy lasts 90 days. Some visitor plans run to 180 days or a year; for a long stay, international health insurance usually fits better.
Hosting family or guests
About one in five visitors comes to see friends or family. Ask us for quotes on their behalf; whether a host can be the buyer depends on the insurer.
Travelling as a group
Coming with a tour company or as a family group? Send the list of travellers and their ages and we request quotes for everyone at once.
Coming to Kenya often?
A one-year visitor plan covers repeat visits, each up to the plan's trip limit.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need travel insurance for a safari in Kenya?
You need Kenya's statutory visitor cover to enter: USD 44, bought in the eTA application or on eCitizen. It is basic, with USD 20,000 for medical care and USD 25,000 for evacuation, so many safari travellers also hold a full travel plan with higher limits and cancellation cover.
Can Naveah sell me Kenya's USD 44 statutory cover?
No. The statutory policy is sold only on Kenya's official eTA and eCitizen portals. We arrange the optional travel plan you hold alongside it, from Kenyan insurers.
What does Kenya's statutory cover not include?
It does not pay for trip cancellation, lost or delayed baggage, travel delays or personal liability, and it covers Kenya only. Evacuation is capped at USD 25,000 and medical treatment at USD 20,000. A full travel plan adds trip cancellation and much higher medical and evacuation limits; baggage and liability cover vary by plan, so we confirm them in your quote.
Is my travel insurance from home enough?
Not on its own: Kenya does not accept a foreign policy in place of the statutory cover. Keep your home policy if it suits your trip, and check its activity, altitude and evacuation terms. A Kenyan visitor plan is an option if your home cover is thin or expensive.
If I have two policies, which one pays?
Official guidance does not say. Many travel policies share a claim with any other insurance that covers the same costs, so tell each insurer about the other policy and keep all receipts.
What does an air evacuation on safari cost?
Reported air-ambulance rates inside Kenya run from about USD 2,300 to USD 11,600 (KSh 300,000 to 1.5 million). A long-haul air ambulance home can cost more than GBP 100,000, well above the statutory USD 25,000 limit.
Are hot-air balloon flights, diving or climbing Mount Kenya covered?
Not automatically. Kenyan travel wordings we read exclude diving and mountain climbing (some only unless endorsed), and none mention balloon flights or game drives. Tell us your activities and we confirm them with the insurer in writing before you buy.
How much is a visitor travel plan?
Kenyan insurers' published visitor rates run from about USD 29 to 66 for 15 days and USD 48 to 98 for a month, with benefits varying by plan. Travellers aged 66 to 80 pay more, children less, and levies may be added.
We are also visiting Tanzania or Zanzibar. Are we covered?
Kenya's statutory cover is for Kenya only. Tanzania, including Zanzibar, requires its own USD 44 visitor policy, and one policy covers both. At least one Kenyan visitor plan also covers Tanzania if you arrive in Kenya and spend most of your trip here, so tell us your full route.
Can I buy a plan for family or guests visiting me in Kenya?
You can ask us for quotes on their behalf; whether a host can be the buyer depends on the insurer, and some insurers require the plan to be bought before the visitor leaves home. Each traveller also needs their own statutory cover from the official portal.
Is there an age limit?
Most Kenyan visitor plans accept travellers up to 80. Premiums rise from age 66, so give us each traveller's age for an accurate quote.
I am staying longer than three months. What do I need?
A statutory policy lasts 90 days, so a longer stay needs a new one. For the extra cover, some visitor plans run to 180 days or a year; for long stays, international health insurance usually fits better.
Planning a safari or holiday in Kenya?
Tell us your dates, ages and plans. We request quotes from Kenyan insurers' visitor plans for you; the statutory USD 44 cover is bought separately on the official portal.
