What is life insurance?
Life insurance pays a lump sum to the people you choose if you die while the policy is in force. In Kenya it is sold by IRA-licensed life insurers as term cover for a set number of years, whole life cover that lasts for life, funeral (last expense) cover, and cover that clears a loan. The payout replaces your income, clears debts and keeps school fees paid.

Life (long-term) insurance in Kenya is governed by the Insurance Act (Cap 487) and supervised by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA); only a person licensed under the Act may carry on insurance business.
Most of that growth is savings and pension business; pure protection is still rare, which is why so many families are left with fundraising when a breadwinner dies.
Types of life insurance in Kenya
Kenyan insurers sell six main kinds of life cover. Most families need the first, and add others as their loans and business grow.
Term life
A fixed sum if you die within a set term, usually 5 to 30 years. The cheapest way to buy a large amount of cover.
Whole life
Cover for the rest of your life, so it always pays out. Costs more; some plans build a cash value.
Funeral (last expense)
KES 30,000 to 1 million for the funeral, usually paid within 48 hours. Often covers parents and children too.
Mortgage and credit life
Clears a home, car or business loan if the borrower dies or is disabled.
Key person cover
Pays a business when an owner or key employee dies, to keep it running or buy out their share.
Savings and education policies
Endowment and school-fees plans that pay at the end of a term, with life cover built in.
Who needs life insurance?
- Parents and anyone whose income supports children, a spouse or parents
- Borrowers with a mortgage, car loan or SACCO loan their family would inherit
- Business owners and partners whose company depends on them
- Kenyans abroad who support family at home
- Single people with debts, dependent relatives or a wish to cover their own funeral
If nobody depends on your income and you have no debts, you may need only funeral cover for now. Buying young locks in a lower premium for later.

What life insurance costs in Kenya
Insurers publish only starting prices: Britam's term plan from KES 3,000 a month for KES 3 million over 5 years, ICEA LION from KES 2,000 a month, APA's micro cover KES 200 a month for KES 100,000. A Kenyan planning estimate puts KES 10 million of 20-year term cover for a healthy 30-year-old at KES 4,000 to 8,000 a month, and 15% of the premium comes back as insurance relief.

How much life cover do you need?
- Your yearly income, times the years your family would need it
- Plus your mortgage, loans and other debts
- Plus school and university fees still to pay
- Plus funeral and final costs
- Minus your savings, investments and any life cover you already have, including group life at work
Advisers' rules of thumb run from 6 to 8 up to 10 to 15 times annual income; our free calculator works it out from your own figures.
Name who gets the money
Under section 111 of the Insurance Act, a life policyholder can nominate who receives the money on death, in the policy or by an endorsement the insurer registers, and can appoint someone to receive it for a nominee who is a minor.
The High Court has held that nominated life funds pass straight to the nominee, outside the estate and without a grant of representation.

In February 2026 the High Court was reported to have ruled that a KES 22 million group life payout with no nomination on file formed part of the deceased's estate, to be shared under succession law rather than paid out directly.

Fill in the nomination when you apply, name an adult to receive money for children, and update it after a marriage, a birth or a divorce.

Frequently asked questions
What is life insurance?
Life insurance is a contract in which you pay premiums and the insurer pays a lump sum to the people you name if you die while the policy is in force. Some plans also pay on permanent disability or a critical illness. In Kenya it is sold by life (long-term) insurers licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority.
What does life insurance not cover?
Each policy lists its own exclusions. The usual ones on Kenyan plans are:
- Suicide in the first two years (some plans list it with no time limit)
- Death from a health condition you did not disclose when you applied
- Death while committing a crime, or from deliberate drug or alcohol abuse
- War, terrorism or riot when you take an active part
- Hazardous sports and private flying, unless the insurer agreed to cover them
- Natural-cause death during a waiting period, where the plan has one
- Any death after the policy has lapsed for unpaid premiums
Read the exclusions page of your policy, and tell us about any risky job or hobby before you apply.
Is life insurance the same as life assurance?
In Kenya the two terms are used for the same thing: cover that pays when someone dies. Strictly, 'assurance' describes cover that will pay out at some point (whole life, endowment), and 'insurance' cover for a set period (term). Insurers' company names often say 'Life Assurance'.
Is life insurance compulsory in Kenya?
No law makes individuals buy life insurance. A bank or SACCO may make credit life or mortgage protection a condition of a loan, and many employers provide group life, but your own cover is your choice.
How much does life insurance cost in Kenya?
Insurers publish only starting prices: Britam's term plan from KES 3,000 a month for KES 3 million over 5 years, ICEA LION from KES 2,000 a month, APA's micro cover KES 200 a month for KES 100,000. A Kenyan planning estimate puts KES 10 million of 20-year term cover for a healthy 30-year-old at KES 4,000 to 8,000 a month. Your age, health and the term decide the exact figure.
How much life cover do I need?
Enough to replace your income for the years your family would need it, plus your debts, your children's school fees and funeral costs, minus your savings and any cover you already have. Advisers' rules of thumb range from 6 to 8 and up to 10 to 15 times annual income. Our calculator works it out from your own figures.
I have group life at work. Do I still need my own cover?
Usually, yes. Group life typically pays 3 to 5 times your salary, which is often less than your family needs, and it ends when you leave the job. Your own policy stays with you and can be sized to your debts and dependants.
Can I get life insurance with diabetes, high blood pressure or HIV?
Often, yes. Insurers decide case by case: they may accept you at the normal rate, add to the premium, exclude a condition, postpone or decline. By law no one can be made to take an HIV test to get cover below the insurer's no-disclosure limit. Always disclose your health honestly: an undisclosed condition can void a claim.
What happens if I miss a premium?
Most insurers give a grace period, often 30 days. If the premium is still unpaid the policy lapses and nothing is paid on a claim. Savings-type policies with a cash value may keep going for a while through an automatic premium loan; ask us before you stop paying.
Can I cancel a new life policy?
Yes. Kenyan insurers give a free-look period after the policy arrives (15 days at Madison Life, for example) in which you can return it and get your premiums back, less any medical fees.
Do I get tax relief on life insurance premiums?
Yes. Resident individuals get insurance relief of 15% of the premiums paid on life, education and health policies for themselves, a spouse or a child, up to KES 60,000 a year. Employees usually claim it through payroll.
Is a life insurance payout taxed in Kenya?
Kenya has no estate or inheritance duty, and a death benefit paid to your family is generally not treated as their income. Ask a tax adviser about policies owned by a business.
What if my life insurer collapses?
Choose an IRA-licensed insurer. If a licensed insurer fails, the Policyholders Compensation Fund pays up to KES 500,000 per claimant on Kenyan policies. We check an insurer's standing before we place your cover.
