How a travel premium is worked out

  • Pick the region: Africa and Asia, Europe and Schengen, worldwide, or worldwide with higher cover (needed for the USA).
  • Find the trip-length band: insurers price in steps such as up to 8 days, 9–14 days and so on, up to 92 days.
  • Choose the level: basic, plus or extra, which sets the medical limit and extras.
  • Adjust for age: children half, 66–75 add 50%, 76–80 add 100%.
  • Add options such as winter sports (often double), and the levies and stamp duty if the insurer adds them.

What makes travel cover cost more or less

  • Destination: the USA and Canada cost most, Africa least.
  • Trip length, in the insurer's bands.
  • Age: from 66 the price rises 50%, from 76 it doubles.
  • Level of cover: higher medical and cancellation limits cost more.
  • Family plan or separate policies.
  • Winter or dangerous sports, added for an extra premium.
  • Annual instead of single trips, if you travel often.

Frequently asked questions

How much is travel insurance for one week?

About USD 13 for Africa or Asia, USD 17–20 for Europe and the Schengen area, USD 22–23 for worldwide cover and USD 30–38 for worldwide cover with higher medical limits, per adult on Kenyan insurers' published rates.

How much is that in Kenya shillings?

Insurers price travel cover in US dollars and you pay in shillings at their rate. At the Central Bank's KSh 129.81 to the dollar (15 October 2026), USD 20 is about KSh 2,600.

What is the cheapest travel insurance in Kenya?

Short Africa trips and one-week Schengen cover are the cheapest, at about USD 13 and USD 17 per adult. The cheapest policy is only good value if it meets your visa rule and has enough medical cover for your destination.

How much more do older travellers pay?

50% more at 66–75 and 100% more at 76–80 on most rate cards; above 80, Europe or Schengen cover at four times the adult rate. Children under 18 pay half.

Are levies and stamp duty included?

It depends on the insurer: some include them in the published price, others add the statutory levies and stamp duty on top. Every quote we send states the full amount you pay.

Is travel insurance a percentage of the trip cost?

Not in Kenya. Insurers price by region, trip length, age and level of cover, not by what you spent on the trip, although some agencies suggest budgeting about 5–7% of the trip's cost.

Single trip or annual multi-trip: which is better?

A single-trip policy is cheaper if you travel once or twice a year. On published rates an annual plan pays for itself from about the 8th to 13th one-week trip, or the 4th to 7th month-long trip, and each trip is limited to 92 or 180 days.
