Student Travel Insurance in Kenya

Six- to twelve-month cover for Kenyans studying abroad: medical care, evacuation, tuition-fee protection and travel home, matched to your visa and university.

We compare travel cover from Kenya's licensed insurers, issue the certificate for your visa, and help you claim from abroad.

New rule from 5 October 2026

Visitors to Kenya now need Kenyan travel health insurance

Every non-Kenyan visitor must buy Kenya's Inbound Travel Health Insurance (up to USD 44 per person) before boarding. Kenyans, Kenyan residents and EAC citizens are exempt; a policy from home does not count.

Do Kenyan students abroad need travel insurance?

It depends on the student visa. The UK charges an Immigration Health Surcharge instead, Australia requires its own OSHC cover, and US J-1 exchange visitors need at least USD 100,000 of medical cover. Elsewhere a Kenyan student plan of six to twelve months, costing about USD 200–521 on published rates, covers medical care, evacuation and the trip there and back, and two plans reimburse university fees up to USD 6,000.

Frequently asked questions

Do Kenyan students studying abroad need travel insurance?

Your student visa decides. The UK charges the Immigration Health Surcharge, Australia requires its own OSHC cover, and US J-1 visitors need USD 100,000 of medical cover. Elsewhere a Kenyan student plan is often the simplest way to be covered, and it adds tuition-fee and travel protection the local schemes lack.

How much is student travel insurance?

About USD 200–415 for six months and USD 278–521 for a year on published Kenyan rates, depending on the zone and level.

Will my university accept a Kenyan policy?

Some will, some will not: many universities run their own compulsory plan or ask for set limits. Send us the university's insurance requirement before you buy and we will match it, or confirm that you need the university's plan instead.

Is there an age limit on student plans?

Yes. One insurer covers students up to 30, another from 16 to 45. Older students can use a standard long-stay plan.

Does a student plan cover the USA?

Only Zone II plans do. Zone I student plans exclude the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan, where medical costs are highest.

Does student cover refund tuition fees?

Two Kenyan student plans reimburse university fees up to USD 6,000 if illness or an insured event stops your studies; check the excess and conditions.

I paid the UK health surcharge. Do I still need insurance?

The surcharge gives you NHS care in the UK, so you do not need medical cover there. A student plan still helps with travel there and back, trips to Europe, baggage, and tuition-fee protection.
