Do you need travel insurance within Kenya or East Africa?
No law requires it within Kenya, but domestic travel insurance adds evacuation, personal accident and baggage cover for trips at least 100 km from home, from about KSh 177 a day. Across the border, mainland Tanzania exempts EAC travellers, but Zanzibar charges Kenyans USD 22 for its own compulsory cover, and Kenyan medical plans rarely work abroad. Rules when crossing the border
Zanzibar requires every foreign visitor, Kenyans included, to buy Zanzibar Insurance Corporation inbound cover: USD 22 for travellers from EAC and SADC states, USD 44 for other adults and USD 22 for children, for up to 92 days.

From 1 October 2026 mainland Tanzania also requires inbound cover for foreign visitors, but qualifying EAC and SADC travellers are exempt there; that exemption does not automatically apply in Zanzibar.

Most local medical and personal accident plans give partial or no cover abroad and rarely have international hospital networks, one Kenyan insurer explains.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need travel insurance within Kenya?
No law requires it, and your medical cover still works at home. Domestic travel insurance adds evacuation, personal accident and baggage cover for safaris, road trips and work travel at least 100 km from home.
How much is domestic travel insurance?
From about KSh 177 a day at one insurer, or about USD 0.60–1.20 a day elsewhere, for trips of 3 to 92 days.
Do Kenyans need insurance to visit Uganda, Tanzania or Rwanda?
Not for mainland Tanzania, which exempts EAC travellers, but Zanzibar charges Kenyans USD 22 for its compulsory visitor cover. Your Kenyan medical cover rarely works across the border, so an Africa plan is worth having.
What does an Africa plan cost?
About USD 13 for up to eight days and about USD 29–31 for a month on published rates, less than Europe or worldwide cover.
Does it cover a safari evacuation by air?
Domestic plans include emergency evacuation within set limits; check the limit if you are going somewhere remote.
Can a school or company cover a group trip?
Yes. Group cover for ten or more travellers on the same itinerary is available, and some corporate plans include domestic trips.
