New rule from 5 October 2026

Visitors to Kenya now need Kenyan travel health insurance

Every non-Kenyan visitor must buy Kenya's Inbound Travel Health Insurance (up to USD 44 per person) before boarding. Kenyans, Kenyan residents and EAC citizens are exempt; a policy from home does not count.

What is corporate travel insurance?

Corporate travel insurance covers employees on business trips under one company policy: emergency medical care abroad, evacuation, trip disruption, baggage and business equipment, and the cost of sending a replacement if someone falls ill. Kenyan insurers sell it as a yearly bank of travel days for unnamed staff, or at a daily rate for groups. It fills the gap WIBA leaves: WIBA pays only for work injuries, at Kenyan scale fees.

Frequently asked questions

What is corporate travel insurance?

Travel insurance that a company buys for staff on business trips, usually as one annual policy covering all travellers: medical and evacuation abroad, trip disruption, baggage and business equipment, and replacement staff if someone falls ill.

Does WIBA cover employees who travel abroad?

Only for work injuries, and only on temporary deployments of under 12 months, at Kenyan scale fees. It does not pay for illness abroad, evacuation at foreign prices, cancellations or baggage. Corporate travel cover fills that gap.

How much does corporate travel insurance cost?

Plans are sold as a bank of travel days: about USD 1,580 for 200 days a year up to about USD 7,450 for 1,500 days, or at about USD 3–8 per traveller per day for groups.

Do we have to name every traveller in advance?

Not with a travel-day plan: staff are declared on a traveller list before each trip and the days are drawn down. Group plans for 10 or more people on the same itinerary need each traveller's details.

How long can each business trip last?

Usually up to 92 days per trip on corporate plans. Longer postings need a long-stay plan or international health insurance.

Is there an age limit for staff?

Yes: one insurer's corporate plan stops at 75. Older directors or consultants can be added on an individual policy.

Are laptops and phones covered?

Corporate plans cover business equipment and gadget theft within set limits; some insurers pay only for registered devices.

Is an employer obliged to insure staff travelling abroad?

WIBA cover is compulsory for every employer and extends to temporary work trips abroad, but no Kenyan law requires travel insurance as such. Most employers buy it as part of their duty of care, and many client and visa requirements make it necessary.
