New rule from 5 October 2026

Visitors to Kenya now need Kenyan travel health insurance

Every non-Kenyan visitor must buy Kenya's Inbound Travel Health Insurance (up to USD 44 per person) before boarding. Kenyans, Kenyan residents and EAC citizens are exempt; a policy from home does not count.

What is family travel insurance?

Family travel insurance covers you, your spouse and usually up to three children under 18 on the same trip, for emergency medical care, evacuation, cancellation, delays and baggage. Kenyan insurers price a family plan at about 2.3 to 2.4 times one adult's premium, and children on individual policies pay half price, so a family of four rarely pays for four adults.

What a family plan covers

Medical care for everyone

Treatment, hospital stays and medicines for each family member who falls ill or is hurt.

Evacuation together

Medical transport home, and travel for a family member who has to stay with a child in hospital.

Cancellation for the family

Non-refundable bookings if one of you falls ill before the trip, on plans with cancellation cover.

Bags and delays

Checked baggage, delayed bags after four hours, and emergency passports.

Before you travel with children

  • Give every traveller's exact date of birth: ages set the price and the eligibility.
  • Check the youngest age the plan accepts; most start at three or six months.
  • For a Schengen visa, each child needs a certificate in their own name.
  • Add a child aged 18 or over, or a grandparent, on their own policy.
  • Keep the 24-hour assistance number on every parent's phone.

Frequently asked questions

What is family travel insurance?

One policy that covers you, your spouse and your children on the same trip, usually up to three children under 18. It costs less than buying adult policies for everyone, and the family shares the limits on some plans.

How much is family travel insurance in Kenya?

Family plans cost about 2.3 to 2.4 times one adult's premium: about USD 51–92 for a worldwide trip of up to a week, and USD 780–980 for a year of trips. A week in Europe for two adults and two children on separate policies is about USD 51–60.

At what age are children covered, and do they pay less?

Children are usually covered from three or six months old to 18, and most Kenyan insurers charge them half the adult rate on individual policies.

How many children can a family plan cover?

Usually up to three children under 18 with the two parents. Larger families add the extra children on their own policies at the child rate.

Do we have to travel together?

A family plan is built for a trip you take together. If one of you travels at different dates or to a different region, that person is usually better on their own policy.

Does a family plan work for Schengen visas?

Yes, as long as the plan meets the EUR 30,000 rule and each family member gets a certificate in their own name for their application. The child visa fee is EUR 45 for ages 6 to 11.

Why do insurers need our exact ages?

Ages set the price and the eligibility. Get them right: in a 2020 case the High Court upheld an insurer's refusal of a USD 200,000 medical claim because a traveller's age had been misstated.

Can grandparents join the family plan?

Family plans normally cover parents and children only. Grandparents take their own policy, with the usual age loadings from 66.
