Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum professional indemnity cover for advocates in Kenya?

KES 1 million. Advocates practising on their own account or in partnership must hold at least this limit, and the practising certificate is not issued without it (Advocates (Professional Indemnity) Regulations, LN 82/2004). Consider more than the minimum: a single conveyancing or litigation error can exceed KES 1 million.

How much is PI for an advocate?

Published October 2026 rates for an individual advocate start at about KES 3,100 a year for the KES 1 million minimum, and about KES 10,100–11,500 for KES 5 million. Law firms are priced on partners, staff and gross fees.

Does PI cover disciplinary proceedings?

Some advocates' policies include the legal costs of defending disciplinary hearings; others do not. It is worth asking for, and we will check it on every quote.

Are losses from client accounts or conveyancing fraud covered?

Partly. Advocates' PI covers negligence in conveyancing and dishonest acts of partners or employees on some wordings, Losses caused by outsiders' fraud may not be covered on every wording. Ask us to check this exposure specifically.

What happens to my cover when I retire or close my practice?

Because PI is claims-made, you need run-off cover to stay protected against claims about work you did before you stopped. Insurers offer it on request; ask us to price it before you close or retire.

Are my employees and partners covered?

Yes. Firm policies cover mistakes by partners and employees acting in their professional roles, and some also cover people working under your supervision. Tell the insurer about partners joining or leaving: incoming and outgoing partner extensions are available.

How quickly can I get a certificate for my licence renewal or tender?

For individual doctors, clinical officers and nurses, some insurers issue the policy online straight after payment. Advocates' cover can also be bought online from some insurers. Firm policies take longer because they are underwritten on fees and staff. Tell us your deadline and we will work to it.
