What insurance cover does a school need in Kenya?
A school in Kenya typically needs cover for its buildings and contents, its school buses, pupils' personal accident, public liability and staff WIBA. WIBA is compulsory for every employer, and every school vehicle must carry at least third-party insurance. Some insurers offer a school insurance cover package that bundles these into one policy for the institution, not for parents.
Covers a school needs
Buildings and contents
Classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, kitchens and staff quarters against fire and selected natural perils.
Burglary and equipment
Computers, lab equipment and furniture stolen in a break-in, plus accidental damage to electronic equipment.
School buses
Comprehensive cover for each bus, including legal liability to the pupils and staff it carries.
Pupils' personal accident
Medical, dental, disablement, death and last-expense benefits for pupils injured at school or on trips.
Public liability
Claims from visitors, parents or neighbours injured on school grounds or at school events.
Staff WIBA and employers' liability
Compulsory cover for teachers, cooks, drivers and grounds staff, including casuals.
Money and fidelity
Fees and cash held by the bursar, and fraud or theft by staff who handle money or stores.
Board liability
Directors' and officers' cover for board members and trustees of private schools.
Lost fee income
Business interruption cover for income lost while damaged buildings are rebuilt.
The legal minimum for schools
Two covers are required by law for most schools: WIBA for staff and motor third-party cover for every vehicle.
Every employer in Kenya must insure against its liability to employees for work injuries and occupational diseases (Work Injury Benefits Act, 2007, s.7(1)). There is no exemption for small employers.
WIBA covers casual workers engaged for the purpose of the employer's trade or business; only casuals employed for some other purpose are excluded (s.5(3)(a)).
Using a vehicle on a Kenyan road without third-party insurance is an offence: a fine of up to KES 10,000, up to two years' imprisonment, or both (Insurance (Motor Vehicles Third Party Risks) Act, Cap 405, s.4). Vehicles carrying passengers for hire or reward, such as PSVs, must also cover passengers; insurers need not pay more than KES 3 million for any one person's claim (s.5).

School risks to plan for
- Dormitory and kitchen fires: insure buildings at full rebuilding cost, or the average clause will cut any claim.
- Bus accidents: declare each bus's seating capacity, as passenger liability is usually rated per seat.
- Playground, sports and laboratory injuries to pupils, which personal accident cover pays regardless of fault.
- Fee collections and bursar's cash, which need money and fidelity cover; burglary policies exclude theft by staff.
- Computer laboratory theft: burglary claims need forcible entry, and insurers usually require a watchman.
- Floods and storms: the 2024 floods displaced more than 293,000 people; flood cover is often an extension you must select.
What this page does not cover
- School-fees or education savings plans for parents, which are life-insurance products
- Individual medical cover for pupils or staff (see medical insurance)
What does school insurance cost?
School packages are quoted on the value of buildings and contents, the number of buses and seats, enrolment for pupils' personal accident, and staff payroll for WIBA. See typical rates for each cover in our cost guide.
Frequently asked questions
What insurance does a school need in Kenya?
A school typically needs fire and burglary cover for buildings, dormitories and equipment; motor cover for school buses; personal accident cover for pupils; public liability; fidelity and money cover for fees; and WIBA for teaching and support staff, which is compulsory for every employer. Some insurers offer a school package that bundles these into one policy for the institution.
What insurance does a school bus need?
Every school vehicle needs at least third-party motor insurance; driving without it is an offence. Vehicles carrying passengers for hire or reward must also cover passengers. School bus policies are usually comprehensive and include passenger legal liability, often rated per seat, so declare each bus's seating capacity. Pupils' personal accident cover adds benefits regardless of fault.
What insurance does a matatu or PSV need in Kenya?
Every PSV must carry third-party insurance that also covers its passengers, because vehicles carrying passengers for hire or reward must insure passenger liability under Cap 405; insurers need not pay more than KES 3 million for any one person's claim. Most owners add comprehensive cover for the vehicle itself.
Is WIBA insurance mandatory in Kenya?
Yes. Section 7(1) of the Work Injury Benefits Act requires every employer in Kenya to insure its liability to employees for work injuries and occupational diseases. There is no exemption for small employers, so a business with one employee needs cover, and casual workers engaged for your business count. Not insuring is a criminal offence.
What is public liability insurance?
Public liability insurance pays compensation and legal costs if your business is legally liable for injury to, or the death of, a customer, visitor or other member of the public, or for damage to their property. Claims usually arise from slips, falls, falling objects or work done at a client's site. It does not cover your own employees, which is WIBA and employers' liability.
What is fidelity guarantee insurance?
Fidelity guarantee pays for money or stock you lose through fraud, forgery, embezzlement or theft by your own employees. You can insure named people, named positions such as cashiers and storekeepers, or all staff. The dishonest act must happen while the policy is in force and be discovered within a set period, typically six to 12 months after the employee leaves or the policy ends.
What is the average clause in business insurance?
Most property policies carry an 'average' condition: if you insure for less than the true value, the insurer cuts your claim in proportion. Insure a property worth KES 10 million for KES 5 million and a KES 2 million loss pays about KES 1 million. Review your sums insured at every renewal, especially stock that rises during busy seasons.
