What does fidelity guarantee insurance cover in Kenya?
Fidelity guarantee insurance in Kenya pays for money or stock you lose through fraud, forgery, embezzlement or theft by your own employees. Burglary cover excludes staff theft, so this is the policy that responds. Losses usually must be discovered within six to 12 months of the employee leaving or the policy ending. Premiums are about 0.85%–1% of the limit a year.
What fidelity guarantee covers
Employee dishonesty
Forgery, embezzlement, larceny and fraudulent conversion of your money or stock by employees.
Named, positions or blanket
Insure named people, named positions such as cashiers, storekeepers and accounts clerks, or all staff in a department.
Per-employee or aggregate limit
Limits apply per employee or for the whole year. Each claim reduces the aggregate limit unless you pay to reinstate it.
What money insurance covers
Cash in transit
Money carried directly between your premises and the bank, including wages and collections, by staff or a security firm.
On the premises
Cash in tills and drawers during business hours.
In a locked safe
Money in a locked safe or strongroom outside business hours, plus damage to the safe after a break-in.
With staff and directors
Money with authorised employees, and on some wordings with directors at home.
Hold-up and assault
Robbery or hold-up, with optional personal accident cover for staff injured in a robbery on some packages.
What is not covered
- Money stolen from an unattended vehicle
- Cash left outside a locked safe when the premises are closed
- Shortages from clerical errors or miscounting
- Mobile money and electronic losses on some wordings (check before relying on it)
- Staff dishonesty under the money section, unless discovered within a short period on some wordings; fidelity guarantee is the proper cover
- Fidelity losses that happened before cover started, or were discovered after the discovery period
- Losses by employees you did not declare, or caused by ignoring the controls you told the insurer you use

Conditions and warranties to expect
- An escort or security firm for cash above an agreed amount, sometimes with a set route and frequency
- Keys and safe combinations kept separately and secret
- Details of the safe's make, weight and anchoring, and the distance to the bank
- Collections banked within a set period, often 48 hours
- A declaration of every employee or position that handles money or stock
- References and internal checks, such as separation of duties and regular stock counts
- An excess on fidelity claims, for example 10% of the loss on one insurer's package
How limits are set
- Estimated annual carry: the total cash you expect to move in a year. Money cover is priced on this.
- Limit any one transit: the most carried on a single trip.
- Limit in the safe and on the premises, in and out of business hours.
- Fidelity limit: per employee or an aggregate for the year, based on the most a dishonest employee could take before it was found.

Frequently asked questions
What is fidelity guarantee insurance?
Fidelity guarantee pays for money or stock you lose through fraud, forgery, embezzlement or theft by your own employees. You can insure named people, named positions such as cashiers and storekeepers, or all staff. The dishonest act must happen while the policy is in force and be discovered within a set period, typically six to 12 months after the employee leaves or the policy ends.
What does money insurance cover?
Money insurance covers cash and cheques lost through theft, robbery or hold-up while in transit to or from the bank, on your premises during business hours, in a locked safe or strongroom after hours, and with authorised staff. Most wordings also pay for damage to the safe. It is priced on your estimated annual cash carried, about 0.1% of it, with a minimum of around KES 3,000.
What conditions apply to business burglary insurance?
Theft is only covered where entry to or exit from the premises was forcible and violent; theft by staff is excluded. Insurers also set security conditions, which can include a watchman or guard outside working hours, grilles and strong locks, an alarm with a maintenance contract, a locked safe and proper stock books. Breaking a warranty can void a claim, so read them before you sign.
What documents do I need for a burglary claim?
You need the claim form, a police abstract (report within 24 hours), photos showing the forced entry, a list of stolen items with invoices or replacement quotations, stock and sales records from before the loss, and a statement from your guard, watchman, alarm company or witnesses. Burglary cover pays only where entry or exit was forcible and violent; theft by your own staff needs fidelity guarantee cover.
Why are business insurance claims declined or reduced?
The common reasons are under-insurance (the average clause cuts the claim in proportion), theft without forcible and violent entry, riot or political-violence damage when that extension was not bought, late notification, wrong or missing information on the proposal form, breaking a security warranty, and losses the policy excludes. Most can be avoided by insuring at true values and reading the warranties.
What is an SME insurance package?
An SME package (also called a business combined or office package) puts several covers into one policy with one premium and one renewal date. Fire and perils is usually the compulsory core; you then choose sections such as burglary, money, all risks, public liability, WIBA, goods in transit, fidelity guarantee and business interruption. Each section has its own sum insured or limit, so you insure only what your business actually has.
How much does business insurance cost in Kenya?
Published minimum premiums for SME packages start at about KES 10,000 a year, and market estimates put a small office from about KES 20,000, a shop from about KES 25,000 and a restaurant from about KES 45,000 a year, before levies. Your price depends on what you insure and its value, your trade, location, construction, security and claims history. Statutory levies and stamp duty are added on top.
What affects the price of business insurance?
The biggest factors are what you insure and its value, your trade (a factory costs more than an office), the building's construction (stone or block is cheaper than timber), the location and neighbouring risks, your security and fire protection, the limits and excesses you choose, the number of staff and payroll for WIBA, and your claims history. Extras such as riot and political-violence cover add to the premium.
