What insurance does a pharmacy or clinic need in Kenya?

A pharmacy or clinic in Kenya typically needs fire and burglary cover for premises and medicine stock, electronic equipment cover for medical devices, money cover, public and products liability, and WIBA for staff, which is compulsory for every employer. Malpractice is a separate policy. Public liability for a clinic typically costs about KES 15,000–50,000 a year before levies.

Healthcare business risks to plan for

  • Break-ins targeting cash and high-value drugs; burglary pays only after forcible entry, and theft by staff needs fidelity cover.
  • Power failures spoiling cold-chain stock; insurers usually add public power failure only where backup power is adequate.
  • Breakdown of costly diagnostic equipment, which a fire policy does not cover.
  • Staff exposure to infection or needle-stick injuries: WIBA covers occupational diseases as well as accidents.
  • Under-insured stock: if you insure medicines for less than their value, the average clause cuts claims in proportion.
  • Keeping business and clinical covers separate: a public liability policy excludes professional negligence, which belongs under malpractice.

Frequently asked questions

What insurance does a pharmacy or clinic need?

A pharmacy or clinic typically needs fire and burglary cover for premises and stock, electronic equipment cover for medical devices, spoilage cover for refrigerated stock, money cover, public and products liability, and WIBA for staff, which is compulsory for every employer. Malpractice (professional liability for clinical care) is a separate policy and is arranged alongside these business covers.

What do electronic equipment and machinery breakdown insurance cover?

Electronic equipment insurance covers computers, servers, POS terminals, telephone systems and medical electronics against sudden damage, including electrical faults, and can pay to restore data and the extra cost of working. Machinery breakdown covers sudden damage to generators, boilers, lifts, compressors and production machinery from electrical or mechanical failure, which fire policies exclude. Both are insured at new replacement value.

What does money insurance cover?

Money insurance covers cash and cheques lost through theft, robbery or hold-up while in transit to or from the bank, on your premises during business hours, in a locked safe or strongroom after hours, and with authorised staff. Most wordings also pay for damage to the safe. It is priced on your estimated annual cash carried, about 0.1% of it, with a minimum of around KES 3,000.

What is the difference between public liability, products liability and professional indemnity?

Public liability covers injury or property damage caused by your premises or activities. Products liability covers injury or damage caused by goods you make, import, sell or repair after they leave your hands. Professional indemnity covers financial loss caused by your advice, design or professional mistakes. A manufacturer may need the first two; a consultant mainly needs the third.

What conditions apply to business burglary insurance?

Theft is only covered where entry to or exit from the premises was forcible and violent; theft by staff is excluded. Insurers also set security conditions, which can include a watchman or guard outside working hours, grilles and strong locks, an alarm with a maintenance contract, a locked safe and proper stock books. Breaking a warranty can void a claim, so read them before you sign.

Does WIBA cover casual workers?

Yes. WIBA covers casual workers engaged for the purpose of your trade or business. Only a casual hired for some other purpose, such as a one-off job unrelated to the business, falls outside the Act. Declare casuals' expected wages when you buy cover; leaving them out of the payroll is a common reason for a claim to be disputed or the premium to be adjusted later.
