What is fish farming insurance?
Fish farming insurance, or aquaculture cover, is agricultural insurance for fish stock and equipment. It pays for fish lost in ponds, tanks or lake cages to disease, oxygen depletion, upwelling, storms, floods, pollution or theft, and for accidental damage to cages and nets. Only a few Kenyan insurers write it.
What fish farm insurance covers
Disease and parasites
Mass deaths from disease or parasite outbreaks in the stock.
Oxygen depletion
Fish suffocating when oxygen in the water crashes, including lake upwelling.
Storm and flood
Ponds overflowing or cages torn loose by severe weather.
Pollution
Stock killed by pollution entering the water.
Theft of stock
Fish stolen by outsiders, with a watchman on duty.
Cages and nets
Accidental damage to the cage structure and nets.
Who qualifies
One insurer's fish-farm cover insures on-shore ponds and off-shore cages against disease and parasites, oxygen deficiency, upwelling, storm, flood, pollution, malicious damage, theft of stock and accidental damage to cages and nets, for tilapia, trout, Nile perch and catfish.

That cover asks for at least 2 years of fish-farming experience, registration with the local authority, a Beach Management Unit or community group, a feeding register, monthly stock checks, a 24-hour watchman and an aquaculture vet's report.

Frequently asked questions
What is fish farming insurance?
It insures fish stock and farm equipment in ponds, tanks or lake cages against sudden losses such as disease, oxygen depletion, storms, floods, pollution and theft, and covers damage to cages and nets. It pays the value of the lost stock, less any excess.
Can I insure fish cages on Lake Victoria?
Yes. The published fish-farm cover is built for cage farming as well as ponds. Expect the insurer to ask for registration with your Beach Management Unit or community group, a feeding register and a 24-hour watchman.
Which fish can be insured?
Published cover names tilapia, trout, Nile perch and catfish. Other species are considered on request.
Can a new fish farmer get cover?
It is harder. The published cover asks for at least two years of fish-farming experience and an aquaculture vet's report. A new farm can still insure its structures and equipment while it builds a record.
How much does fish farm insurance cost?
No Kenyan insurer publishes a fish-farm rate. The premium depends on the stock value, the system (pond or cage), the species, your records and security. We get quotes after a short farm assessment.
Are pumps, aerators and boats covered?
They can be. Cages and nets are part of the fish-farm cover; pumps, aerators, generators, feed stores and boats are usually added under a farm property or machinery section. Tell us what you use and we include it.
How do I claim for dead fish?
Call the insurer within 24 hours, keep samples of the dead fish for the vet, record the water conditions and take dated photos and videos. Send the vet's report, your feeding register and stock counts with the claim form. For theft, add a police abstract.
What does fish farm insurance not cover?
The published fish-farm cover excludes:
- Losses from unsuitable or poor-quality feed
- Fish lost through a broken net, unless the cage itself was badly damaged by a storm
- Harvesting fish before they are ready
- War, terrorism, riot and sabotage
- Theft by your own workers or household
Daily records of feeding, water quality and stock counts are what settle a claim quickly.
