How a farm premium is worked out

  • Sum insured: for animals, a registered vet's valuation; for crops, your input costs or the expected value of the harvest.
  • Premium = sum insured × the rate for your crop or animals, location and farming practice.
  • If that comes to less than the insurer's minimum premium, you pay the minimum.
  • Options such as theft, transit or loss of milk income are added on top.
  • Then the PCF levy (0.25% of the premium) is added, with any training levy and the stamp duty on your invoice. There is no VAT.

What makes farm cover cost more or less

  • The crop or animal: high-value dairy cows, greenhouses and horticulture cost more to insure than hardy beef cattle or maize.
  • The perils chosen: theft, drought and transit add to the rate.
  • Herd or farm size: insurers give better rates on larger herds.
  • Your records and experience: vaccination history, yield records and years of farming.
  • Location and climate: drought- or flood-prone counties and irrigated versus rain-fed land.
  • The excess you accept and your claims history.

Frequently asked questions

How much is livestock insurance in Kenya?

The one insurer that publishes rates charges 4% to 9% of each animal's valued price a year, depending on the species, herd size and your experience, with minimum premiums of about KES 3,000 to 5,000 per farmer or per animal. Market quotes for healthy dairy cows cluster near 4%.

How much is cow insurance per month?

At about 4% of the vet's valuation, a KES 150,000 cow costs around KES 6,000 a year, or roughly KES 500 a month. At the top of the published band it would be about KES 1,125 a month. Most policies are paid yearly; some insurers accept instalments. Illustrative, not a quote.

How much is crop insurance per acre in Kenya?

It depends on what you insure. At the published 4.5% to 15% band, insuring KES 40,000 of inputs on an acre costs about KES 1,800 to 6,000. Subsidised KAIP maize cover has cost the farmer about KSh 620 an acre.

How much is poultry insurance in Kenya?

No insurer publishes a per-bird rate. Minimum premiums seen in the market run from about KES 1,000 to 5,000 per policy, and the final price depends on bird type, housing, vaccination records and flock size.

Is there an excess on farm insurance?

Usually, yes. Insurers that publish livestock terms deduct the first 10% of each loss, or 20% for theft, and theft claims may wait six weeks in case the animals are recovered.

Is VAT or any levy added to agricultural insurance?

No VAT: insurance is exempt. The Policyholders' Compensation Fund levy adds 0.25% of the premium. Any training levy and the stamp duty are added on your insurer's invoice.

How can I pay less for farm insurance?

These steps usually bring the premium down without losing cover:

  • Insure the right value: a current vet valuation or real input costs, not a guess
  • Insure the whole herd rather than one animal: larger herds earn better rates
  • Keep vaccination, treatment and yield records, and tag every animal
  • Join a cooperative or group scheme where your dairy society offers one
  • Use the subsidised scheme for listed crops and buy private cover only where you need it
  • Compare insurers: rates for the same farm differ, so we quote several

Tell us what you farm and we will show the options side by side.

Is index insurance cheaper than indemnity cover?

Usually, because nobody has to inspect each farm or animal, and government schemes subsidise it. The trade-off is basis risk: it may not pay for a loss on your own farm if the area as a whole did well.

Can a farmer claim the premium against tax?

The Income Tax Act has no special rule for farm premiums, but costs incurred wholly and exclusively to earn farming income are generally deductible, so a farming business can usually deduct its crop and livestock premiums. Check with your accountant.
