From each insurer's own Kenyan website, checked 18 October 2026; Takaful's own site could not be read, so its row comes from published scheme records. A dash means we did not find it on the site, not that the insurer never offers it. Listed alphabetically; the order is not a ranking.

How to choose an agricultural insurer
- Does it cover your crop or animal at your scale: a single cow, 500 birds, one greenhouse?
- What are the claim rules: how fast you must report, who does the post-mortem, what photos are needed?
- What is the excess, and how is theft treated?
- How is the sum insured set: vet valuation, input costs or expected yield?
- Is a farm visit needed before cover starts, and how soon can it happen?
- Does it have claims staff or vets near your county?
- Is the insurer financially sound? Avoid any under statutory management.
- Can you pay by M-Pesa or in instalments, and will your lender accept the policy?
The market in numbers
Kenyan crop and livestock insurance premiums reached about KSh 2.04 billion in 2025, up from about KSh 1.2 billion in 2024.
Fewer than 1% of Kenyan farmers and pastoralists have agricultural insurance, and farm cover is under 1% of all insurance premiums.
Source: National Agricultural Insurance Policy (December 2023)
In FinAccess 2024, 5.2% of people who live mainly from farming held private insurance. Among those without it, 72.7% said they cannot afford it and 30.3% said they don't understand it.
What the insurers charge
Only one insurer publishes rate bands for farm cover, and most quote only after a vet valuation or farm visit. Our cost guide sets out the published bands, minimum premiums, scheme prices and worked examples.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best insurance company for farmers in Kenya?
There is no single best insurer: it depends on what you farm. Some cover a single dairy cow, others need herds of 20; only a few cover greenhouses, poultry or fish. Compare the claim rules, excess and valuation basis as well as the price. We compare the insurers that fit your farm for you.
Which livestock insurance providers are available in Kenya?
APA, Britam (through Britam Connect), CIC General, Geminia, Liberty (Heritage), Madison General and Old Mutual General publish livestock cover. GA covers horses only, and Takaful Insurance of Africa has underwritten pastoral index cover.
Which companies offer crop insurance in Kenya?
APA, Britam (Britam Connect), CIC General, Geminia, Liberty (Heritage) and Old Mutual General publish crop cover. Geminia, Liberty and APA also list index options for crops.
Which insurers cover poultry in Kenya?
APA, Britam (Britam Connect, for flocks of 500 birds or more), Liberty (Heritage) and Old Mutual General list poultry. Several others cover only cattle, goats and sheep.
Which insurers cover greenhouses?
Geminia and Liberty (Heritage) have greenhouse covers, APA covers steel-framed greenhouses, and Old Mutual insures greenhouses as farm assets under its crop policy.
Which insurer covers fish farms in Kenya?

Does Jubilee still sell farm insurance?
No. Jubilee's general business merged into SanlamAllianz General Insurance on 1 November 2025, and SanlamAllianz lists no agricultural cover.
Is there Sharia-compliant (takaful) livestock insurance in Kenya?
Yes. Takaful Insurance of Africa has offered index-based livestock takaful and has led pastoral index payouts. Its website could not be checked for current products, so ask us and we will confirm.
Is farm insurance bought through a bank different?
Some banks sell crop and livestock cover without naming the insurer behind it. Always ask which insurer underwrites the policy and read its claim rules: the insurer, not the bank, pays the claim.
Which insurer fits your farm?
Tell us what you farm. We compare the insurers that actually cover it and send you the options side by side.
