Can Kenyans abroad get life insurance?
Yes. Kenyans living abroad can take international life cover in US dollars, pounds or euros that follows them between countries and pays their family in Kenya, and Kenyan insurers sell diaspora funeral and return-ticket plans. Naveah arranges both from Nairobi and helps your family if they ever claim.
The diaspora in numbers
Kenya's Diaspora Policy 2024 estimates the diaspora at 3 to 4 million people.
Kenyans abroad sent home USD 5.03 billion in the 12 months to September 2026.

What the law says for Kenyans abroad
Under the Insurance Act, 'Kenya business' means insurance on any person or life situated in Kenya, or where premiums are ordinarily payable in Kenya, whatever the person's nationality.
A Kenyan living abroad who pays premiums from abroad appears to fall outside 'Kenya business'. This is a reading of the Act's wording, not yet confirmed by the IRA.
Diaspora plans from Kenyan insurers
CIC sells a Diaspora Last Expense plan and a Diaspora Return Ticket, which pays once on the first death of a parent, spouse, child or sibling in Kenya to fund the trip home.
Old Mutual's Diaspora Last Expense is priced in US dollars for Kenyans living abroad and covers funeral and repatriation costs for the family; principal and spouse join up to age 60, parents up to 75.
Shillings or dollars?
The shilling moved from about KES 101.6 to the US dollar in November 2016 to KES 160.2 in January 2024, and stood at KES 129.9 in October 2026.
A KES 10 million sum assured bought in 2015 was worth about USD 102,000 then; at the October 2026 rate of KES 129.91 it is worth about USD 77,000, nearly a quarter less.

- Does the cover continue if I move again, or move home?

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy Kenyan life insurance while living abroad?
Kenyan insurers sell diaspora funeral and return-ticket plans to Kenyans abroad, and some accept applications for shilling cover from abroad. Check whether the plan pays if you die outside Kenya and how premiums are paid. We find the plans that accept you.
What does international life cover not pay for?
Each plan lists its exclusions. The usual ones are:
- Suicide in the first year, or two on some plans
- Death from a condition you did not disclose
- War or terrorism in countries your home government advises against visiting
- Death while living in or visiting a country the plan excludes
- Alcohol or drug misuse, and criminal acts
Read the country list and exclusions before you buy, and tell us about any risky job or travel.
Is international life cover allowed if I live abroad?
Kenyan law regulates 'Kenya business': insurance on a life situated in Kenya or paid for from Kenya. A Kenyan living abroad and paying from abroad appears to fall outside it, though the IRA has not confirmed that reading. We explain how your cover is arranged before you apply.
Should my life cover be in shillings or dollars?
Match the currency to what the money will pay for. If it will pay school fees, a loan or living costs in Kenya, a shilling policy pays in the currency of those costs. The shilling has moved a lot against the dollar since 2016, which matters if your family's costs are abroad.
Who claims for me if I die abroad?
Your nominated beneficiary in Kenya claims with the policy, death certificate and IDs. A death abroad needs the foreign death certificate and the embassy's notification. We help your family put the documents together.
What happens to my cover when I leave Kenya?
An international plan carries on in most countries; check its list of excluded countries. A Kenyan plan may restrict cover abroad, so ask before you move.
