What life insurance can expats in Kenya get?
Expatriates living in Kenya can buy international life cover in US dollars, pounds or euros that moves with them when they leave, or a Kenyan shilling policy with an Alien ID. Employer cover usually ends with the contract, so a personal policy is what keeps the family protected between postings.
Your three options
International cover
Dollar, pound or euro cover that follows you from posting to posting.
A Kenyan policy
Shilling cover with an Alien ID; check whether it pays for a death abroad.
Employer group cover
Useful while it lasts, but usually ends with your contract.

Frequently asked questions
My employer gives me life cover. Is that enough?
Often not. Employer cover is usually a multiple of salary, ends when your contract ends and may stop if you move. A personal international policy stays with you.
What does international life cover not pay for?
Each plan lists its exclusions. The usual ones are:
- Suicide in the first year, or two on some plans
- Death from a condition you did not disclose
- War or terrorism in countries your home government advises against visiting
- Death while living in or visiting a country the plan excludes
- Alcohol or drug misuse, and criminal acts
Read the country list and exclusions before you buy, and tell us about any risky job or travel.
Can I buy a Kenyan policy as an expatriate?
Yes, with an Alien ID. Check the territorial terms: one Kenyan whole life plan does not pay for deaths outside Kenya of people who are not East African citizens.
What happens to my cover when I leave Kenya?
An international plan carries on in most countries; check its list of excluded countries. A Kenyan plan may restrict cover abroad, so ask before you move.
Does the rule apply to expatriates living in Kenya?
Yes. The test is where the insured person lives, not their nationality, so cover on an expatriate living in Kenya is 'Kenya business'.
How much does international life insurance cost?
One international insurer publishes USD 68 a month for USD 650,000 of cover for a 40-year-old non-smoker living in Kenya (2025). Age, health, smoking, the sum and whether the premium is fixed or renewed yearly decide your price.
Do I need a medical for international cover?
Often not: healthy applicants under about 50 asking for less than about USD 750,000 usually apply online with health questions only. Where a medical is needed, a qualified doctor in Nairobi can usually do it.
