Can Kenyans abroad and expats in Kenya get life insurance?
Yes. Kenyan insurers sell diaspora funeral and return-ticket plans to Kenyans living abroad, and some accept applications for shilling life insurance to protect a family, loan or school fees at home. Expatriates living in Kenya can buy cover from Kenyan insurers with an Alien ID. Check where the plan pays, the currency and how your family would claim.
The diaspora in numbers
Kenya's Diaspora Policy 2024 estimates the diaspora at 3 to 4 million people.
Kenyans abroad sent home USD 5.03 billion in the 12 months to September 2026.
What Kenyan insurers offer Kenyans abroad
Diaspora last expense
Funeral costs and repatriation for you and the family at home; Old Mutual prices its plan in US dollars.
Return ticket
A lump sum to fly home when a parent, spouse, child or sibling in Kenya dies (CIC).
Shilling life cover
Term or whole life that pays in Kenya, to clear a loan or keep school fees paid.
Cover for parents
Funeral plans that take parents up to 75 and older, paid for from abroad.
Diaspora plans from Kenyan insurers
CIC sells a Diaspora Last Expense plan and a Diaspora Return Ticket, which pays once on the first death of a parent, spouse, child or sibling in Kenya to fund the trip home.
Old Mutual's Diaspora Last Expense is priced in US dollars for Kenyans living abroad and covers funeral and repatriation costs for the family; principal and spouse join up to age 60, parents up to 75.
Expatriates living in Kenya
Britam accepts Alien ID holders, foreign nationals resident in Kenya, on its term, family income, critical illness and whole life plans.
Britam's Whole Life plan does not pay for deaths outside Kenya of people who are not East African citizens.

If you may leave Kenya, ask whether the cover continues and pays for a death abroad before you buy.
Offshore policies and Kenyan law
Placing Kenyan insurance with an insurer that is not licensed in Kenya needs the Commissioner of Insurance's prior written approval. Breaking the rule is an offence (a fine of up to KES 5 million, up to 5 years in prison, or both), though the policy itself stays valid.
The Policyholders Compensation Fund pays policyholders of a failed licensed insurer up to KES 500,000 per claimant (raised from KES 250,000 in 2026). It covers Kenyan policies only, funded by a 0.25% levy on premiums.

The relief applies to a policy with an insurer lawfully carrying on life business in Kenya, with the sum assured payable in Kenya in Kenyan shillings, so a foreign-currency policy is unlikely to qualify.
Naveah arranges cover only with insurers licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority.
Shillings or dollars?
The shilling moved from about KES 101.6 to the US dollar in November 2016 to KES 160.2 in January 2024, and stood at KES 129.9 in October 2026.
A shilling policy pays in the currency of costs at home such as school fees, a mortgage or rent. If your family's costs are abroad, talk to us about how the currency affects the cover you need.
Questions to ask before you buy from abroad
- Does the plan pay if I die outside Kenya?
- Can I pay by card or bank transfer from abroad, and in which currency?
- Who in Kenya will claim, and do they have the documents they need?
- Does cover continue if I move back home, or move again?
- Have I nominated beneficiaries, and an adult for any children?
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy Kenyan life insurance while living abroad?
Kenyan insurers sell diaspora funeral and return-ticket plans to Kenyans abroad, and some accept applications for shilling cover from abroad. Check whether the plan pays if you die outside Kenya and how premiums are paid. We find the plans that accept you.
What does life insurance not cover?
Each policy lists its own exclusions. The usual ones on Kenyan plans are:
- Suicide in the first two years (some plans list it with no time limit)
- Death from a health condition you did not disclose when you applied
- Death while committing a crime, or from deliberate drug or alcohol abuse
- War, terrorism or riot when you take an active part
- Hazardous sports and private flying, unless the insurer agreed to cover them
- Natural-cause death during a waiting period, where the plan has one
- Any death after the policy has lapsed for unpaid premiums
Read the exclusions page of your policy, and tell us about any risky job or hobby before you apply.
Can expatriates in Kenya buy life insurance from Kenyan insurers?
Yes. Foreign nationals resident in Kenya with an Alien ID can buy cover such as Britam's term and whole life plans. Check the territorial terms: Britam's Whole Life does not pay for deaths outside Kenya of non-East African citizens.
Can I buy life insurance from an insurer outside Kenya?
Kenyan insurance placed with an insurer that is not licensed in Kenya needs the Commissioner of Insurance's prior written approval. An offshore policy is also outside the Policyholders Compensation Fund and does not qualify for insurance relief. Naveah arranges cover only with IRA-licensed insurers.
Should my life cover be in shillings or dollars?
Match the currency to what the money will pay for. If it will pay school fees, a loan or living costs in Kenya, a shilling policy pays in the currency of those costs. The shilling has moved a lot against the dollar since 2016, which matters if your family's costs are abroad.
Who claims for me if I die abroad?
Your nominated beneficiary in Kenya claims with the policy, death certificate and IDs. A death abroad needs the foreign death certificate and the embassy's notification. We help your family put the documents together.
