Which insurance companies sell business insurance in Kenya?
Most of Kenya's business insurance companies are general insurers such as SanlamAllianz, Britam, APA, CIC, ICEA LION, Old Mutual, GA, Madison, Liberty/Heritage, NCBA Insurance, Geminia, Pioneer, Mayfair and Pacis. Around a dozen sell a named SME package; others sell covers one by one. Jubilee no longer sells business insurance: its general business is now SanlamAllianz.

Recent changes in the market
Mergers, renames and two insurers in statutory management have changed who you buy from.
Jubilee no longer sells business (general) insurance in Kenya. Its general business became Jubilee Allianz General, which merged with Sanlam General on 1 November 2025 to form Sanlam Allianz General Insurance (Kenya) Limited.
AIG Kenya became wholly owned by NCBA Group in July 2024 and was renamed NCBA Insurance in March 2025; UAP Old Mutual rebranded as Old Mutual in May 2022; Heritage's general business now sits under the Liberty Life & Heritage Insurance brand.
If an insurer collapses, the Policyholders Compensation Fund compensates eligible claimants up to KES 500,000 each. Trident and Corporate Insurance were placed under statutory management in March 2026 and cannot write new business.
What the insurers' websites do not tell you
- Prices: few insurers publish any business premium or rate; most quote only after a proposal form
- Limits: only some publish the size caps for their SME package
- Claims timelines: only a handful publish a settlement target for business claims
- Excesses and warranties: these usually appear only in the brochure, proposal form or policy wording
That is why comparable quotes on the same sections and sums insured matter more than a brand name.
How to choose a business insurer
- Check the insurer is licensed and active Two insurers were placed under statutory management in March 2026 and cannot write new business. If an insurer collapses, the compensation fund pays only up to KES 500,000 per claimant.
- Check its package fits your trade Some packages refer garages, timber businesses, forex bureaus, mobile money shops and jewellers for separate quotes, and size caps differ by insurer.
- Compare the sections, not just the price One package includes business interruption and goods in transit; another leaves them out. Check riot and political-violence cover too.
- Read the excesses and warranties Guard, safe, alarm and cash-escort conditions can decide whether a burglary or money claim is paid.
- Look at how it handles claims Prefer insurers that publish a claims process, document lists and a settlement target.
- Ask about payment options Some offer instalments or premium financing; others need the full premium before cover starts.
Buying direct or through an insurance agency
Direct from an insurer
You see one insurer's products and price. Fine if you already know which insurer and cover you want.
Through an insurance agency
An IRA-licensed agency such as Naveah Capital places cover with the insurers it represents and can compare their quotes for you.
Cost to you
Insurers pay intermediaries' commission from the premium, so using an agency usually does not add to your price.
Frequently asked questions
Which insurance company is best for a small business?
No single insurer is best for every business. The right one depends on whether its package accepts your trade, the sections and limits you need, its excesses and security warranties, how it pays claims and what it charges for your risk. Compare at least three quotes on the same sums insured, read the exclusions, and check the insurer's published claims process before you choose.
Does Jubilee still sell business insurance in Kenya?
No. Jubilee no longer sells business (general) insurance in Kenya. Its general business became Jubilee Allianz General, which merged with Sanlam General on 1 November 2025 to form Sanlam Allianz General Insurance (Kenya) Limited. Existing Jubilee business policies for fire, liability, WIBA and similar covers are now handled by SanlamAllianz; Jubilee itself sells life, health and pensions.
What happens if my insurer collapses?
If an insurer collapses, the Policyholders Compensation Fund compensates eligible claimants up to KES 500,000 each, which may be far less than a large business claim. In March 2026 Trident and Corporate Insurance were placed under statutory management and cannot write new business. Before you buy, check that the insurer is licensed and active, and spread very large risks if needed.
What is an SME insurance package?
An SME package (also called a business combined or office package) puts several covers into one policy with one premium and one renewal date. Fire and perils is usually the compulsory core; you then choose sections such as burglary, money, all risks, public liability, WIBA, goods in transit, fidelity guarantee and business interruption. Each section has its own sum insured or limit, so you insure only what your business actually has.
Is an SME package cheaper than buying separate policies?
Usually, yes. Bundling several covers in one package typically costs 15–30% less than buying them separately (market estimate), and you deal with one proposal, one schedule and one renewal date. Separate policies make sense when one risk is large or specialised, such as a factory's machinery, a fleet or a big contract, or when an insurer will not include your trade in its package.
Can I pay for business insurance in instalments?
Often, yes. At least one insurer states that its SME package can be paid in instalments, and several offer premium financing, where a bank or financier pays the annual premium and you repay it monthly, usually with interest. Others expect the full premium before cover starts. Ask for the total cost of financing, not just the monthly figure, and keep payments up: a missed instalment can end the cover.
How long does a business insurance claim take in Kenya?
Kenya's claims benchmark is about 90 days. Some insurers publish faster targets once all documents are in: one processes claims of up to KES 300,000 within three working days, and others quote about seven working days on average for documented general claims. Large or disputed losses take longer because a loss adjuster must investigate. Draft IRA guidelines would tighten the timelines.
How much does business insurance cost in Kenya?
Published minimum premiums for SME packages start at about KES 10,000 a year, and market estimates put a small office from about KES 20,000, a shop from about KES 25,000 and a restaurant from about KES 45,000 a year, before levies. Your price depends on what you insure and its value, your trade, location, construction, security and claims history. Statutory levies and stamp duty are added on top.
Why arrange business insurance through Naveah Capital?
Naveah Capital is an insurance agency that compares 9+ of Kenya's top insurers, so you see several packages and prices for your trade instead of one. We check the sections, limits, excesses and warranties that decide claims, flag covers a landlord, lender or tender will ask for, and help you when you need to claim. Tell us about your business on WhatsApp or the quote form to start.
